City of Huntington Beach

The former unincorporated community of Sunset Beach was annexed to the City of Huntington Beach August 22, 2011. The Sunset Beach Specific Plan (SBSP), as approved by the City Council on January 17, 2017, may be accessed by clicking the link below.

The City has been waiting for the California Coastal Commission to certify the SBSP since the annexation.  During this waiting period, the County continued processing zoning entitlements, issuing building permits, and conducting inspections for Sunset Beach.  However, starting April 13, 2015 the City commenced processing new zoning entitlements, issuing building permits and Certificate of Occupancies, and conducting inspections for Sunset Beach.  Planning staff will be responsible for reviewing all development related permits for compliance with the draft SBSP and since it has not been certified by the California Coastal Commission, most development will likely require their approval prior to issuing any City permits.  The local California Coastal Commission office is located at:
